Homemade Bitters

Bitters are such a fun way to spruce up cocktails. Turns out they are pretty easy to make as well! I made two different batches - Lavender bitters and Lemon Bitters. My favorite way to use these bitters are in martinis. (See the Moore Food Martini recipe here.)

Lavender Bitters

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup high proof Vodka or Everclear

  • 3/4 cup dried Lavender

  • 1 tablespoon Cloves

  • 5 Star Anise pods

  • 1 vanilla bean

  • Orange Zest from one Orange

Lemon Bitters

  • 1 cup high proof Vodka or Everclear

  • 1 tablespoon cloves

  • 3 Star Anise Pods

  • 1 tablespoon Juniper Berries

  • 1 tablespoon Cardamom Pods

  • Zests from 2 lemons

  • 1 vanilla bean

Directions for making bitters:

  1. Mix ingredients in a pint jar with the liquor of your choice. Let the jar sit for two weeks, shaking every couple of days.

  2. After two weeks, strain through a coffee filter or these cloth. Fill into dropper bottles and use in any cocktail that you like.
